Hey Ben
Cheers for the comments on my car - she is damn addictive! :)
Anyways - Im very pleased with the water injection... its an awesome
improvement!
Let me start at the beginning. As you have probably read on my site, i run pretty serious boost and have done a lot of other upgrades to manage the fuel, intake and exhaust requirements. I had a problem when the head temp would get pretty hot (and ambient temp was high) and when running outside the "efficiency" of the mitsubishi TE05 turbo (probably above 16 or 17psi) which i put on a couple of years back - the stock turbo for my model was a Garret T3. The mitsubishi was used on 1991 - 1993 classic 900 Turbos and that is where i sourced it from - it gives slightly quicker spool up compared to the Garret. However, If i kept the boot in and tried to maintain big boost it would occasionally ping/pre detonate - The Saab APC always caught it in time tho and reduced boost. This is even running RICH through out the high boost... it still wouldnt matter and ping slightly.
My boost on cold days was much better and a lot more stable. Well the water injection has seemed to cure all sign of ping (even at 20psi) and it maintains such a smooth transition through the boost range its incredible. The car just pulls and pulls. I drove a mates 1996 9000 Aero with the abbott motorsport chip a while back and my 900 Aero performs very similarly... maybe no so much down low gusto... but still quick!
I did a little test after driving back from my mechanic David's workshop
(also an avid hardcore Saab nut and saab club member) - which is about 20km from
my home... was on boost and having fun most of the way! Got home, popped the
bonnet and I felt the turbo to intercooler duct... ouch! that was
hot and unbearable to touch! I then felt the intercooler to throttle body duct
that has the water injeciton nozzle in it (see pics) ... that felt warm only and
i could leave my hand touching it! That kind of intake temp must be good for the
engine having nice cool air going in! :)
cheers
Steve!
